Happiness Happens Month – August 2019

There seems to be a culture for national and international awareness days and months. Some of them are perfectly understandable like humanitarian issues, medical advances and disease awareness, but we have also added to this list various foods, beverages, activities and animals. Which is in my opinion somewhat diluting the original intention of the awareness campaigns, we are bombarded with so many different things to ‘celebrate’ you question do they need celebrating? If so how do you celebrate them? Simply raising awareness could be argued as
For example August as you can see is Happiness Happens Month but conversely its also:

  • Family Fun Month
  • Dog Days of Summer – July 3 – August 11
  • International Clown Week – always August 1-7
  • National Catfish Month
  • National Eye Exam Month
  • National Golf Month
  • Peach Month
  • Romance Awareness Month
  • Water Quality Month
  • National Picnic Month

Some of the things on this list are actually very important, water quality, eye exams and family fun month are in my opinion worth making a fuss about, mental and physical health are 2 very important issues which should be the current topic of conversation, checking the #happinesshappensmonth on twitter its an odd mixture of adverts & competitions from companies using the hashtag and people posting motivational messages. These campaigns can work if people know about them, for example I have a list of awareness months on a separate calendar but I found even more searching today and I’m sure as time goes on the list will grow again.
My featured image is as you recognise, the symbol of breast cancer awareness it is the original ribbon that started it all, there is a list of which cancers other colours relate to available all over the internet. The pink ribbon has become synonymous with breast cancer awareness and is by far the most effective method of advertising and generating income for the charities involved.
So when it comes to more serious issues that we have ‘Months’ for I personally don’t think its appropriate for companies to jump on the bandwagon for social media attention #happinesshappensmonth being a perfect example – unless they are linking it to mental health awareness rather than inviting them to be happy because they might win something.

  1. I hadn’t realized August was Happiness Happens month. I think this is a wonderful thing to promote. I also think that we need to let people know that finding happiness takes work and time to understand oneself. The work to become happy is where mental health comes in.
